During my stay in Ljubljana for family and professional reasons, I encountered an incident at Barsos Lekarna that I found deeply unsettling and unprofessional. Being a foreigner, I was already navigating the challenges of a different culture and language. When a skin condition surfaced, I was prescribed a particular cream by a dermatologist. When I went to pick it up, there were two female employees present: a younger woman and an older lady. The younger one seemed to find great amusement in my surname, which apparently has a humorous (?) connotation in Slovenian. She couldn't contain her laughter, doubling over and retreating to the back of the pharmacy. While such a reaction could have been excusable (though inappropriate) from a mere passerby, I expected a higher standard of professionalism from someone in her position. The older woman, rather than reprimanding her colleague for such blatant unprofessionalism, tried to justify her behavior. She attempted to explain in broken English how "perfect" my surname was, but her words were more patronizing than comforting. I want to point out that while this might be an isolated incident, it gives an unfortunate representation of the small-town mentality that sometimes pervades even the most cosmopolitan of cities. It's saddening that some individuals in this lovely country, while eagerly accepting foreign money, are not as welcoming of foreign people. I would hope that businesses, especially those in the health sector, would train their staff to approach diversity with respect and kindness, rather than mockery. Needless to say, I won't be returning to this pharmacy, and I would advise fellow travelers, especially those from abroad, to be wary of the service they might encounter
