Tromostovje or Triple bridge is located in the heart of Ljubljana, it is a group of three bridges across the Ljubljanica River. It connects the Ljubljana's historical, medieval town on one bank and the modern town on the other side. It is next to the Statue of Preseren and close to the Central Ljubljana open and closed market. The central bridge is partly built from Glinica limestone. Other parts are built from concrete. There is mention of a wooden bridge in this location from 1280. It was at first called the Old Bridge. In 1657, the wooden bridge burned down at this point, so it was replaced with a new one, just as a wooden one. There were barracks on it. The bridge was then protected by a cross at the time, which was removed at the end of the 18th century. Due to instability and the risk of collapse, the wooden bridge was demolished in 1842 and the stone Spital Bridge was designed by architect Giovanni Picco. The bridge was named after the then archduke Franz Karl. Fifty years after the stone bridge was erected, Ljubljana was hit by a strong earthquake, which the bridge sustained without damage. The three-bridge, as we call it today, the three bridges across the Ljubljanica River, began to grow as an idea of architect Jože Plečnik in 1929. At that time, he began to design this part of Ljubljana. Plečnik accomplished the task more than perfectly, and in 1932 the light of the world saw the Triple Bridge. Today all tree bridges are used only by pedestrians. And this is a place to be. You cannot visit Ljubljana without passing the river on one of those tree bridges ;-) Also great spot to take your pics.
