I was shocked to see an aggressive local (who appeared drunk) swearing, bullying and throwing objects at quite a few groups of tourists at Prešeren square, the main square of Ljubljana. Realising that TIC Shop Ljubljana was just a few metres away, I thought it would make sense to inform them and that perhaps if they called the Police, appropriate actions would be taken quickly. But I left the tourist information office with huge disappointment and disgust. Their employee was rude and unhelpful to me. She showed no concern whatsoever regarding the situation. She said if I had witnessed an incident, then I should call the Police myself. Basically, if tourists were being bullied outside their office, it was none of their business. So, I called the Police myself and encountered a very polite operator who did the necessary. At least four Police officers came to the square within 3 minutes and confronted the man in question. After yesterday's incident, I found myself wondering what the role of TIC Shop Ljubljana really is.... is it to inform and help tourists or is it to sell as many sLOVEnia t-shirts as possible?
We deeply regret your unfortunate experience and we're sorry that our information officer left such an unpleasant impression.
In cases when our staff is not witnessing the event, they advise to the actual eyewitness to call the Police themselves, but they always offer help with it. We were told you were offered the office phone, if you would wish to call Police from TIC (and they could potentially help with translation), but you declined that possibility. Since you were concerned about the level of the language knowledge of the Police, we are glad, that you encountered a polite operator with sufficient knowledge, as can be read from your review.
The whole team at TIC is working hard on friendly welcome of inhabitants and visitors to Ljubljana and on efficient informing of tourists. We are taking your complaint seriously and we will make sure such instances will be handled differently, if they happen again.
