Maria Zvezda Church, Nova Štifta
A former pilgrimage center because of the miracles that happened and supposedly still happen on Metuljev hrib where the mighty white church stands.
Stairs lead up to the church, at the top there are statues of a mother and child and a statue whose motif is slightly unrecognizable due to the weather.
Around the church is the village cemetery.
On the left on the church, there are embedded memorial plaques to fallen soldiers from the First World War.
When you enter through the huge doors that are almost always unlocked interior is painted with many frescoes of saints. My eye was especially attracted by the unusual statue of Marja Zvezda ( Mary the Star ), holding Jesus in her arms. They are both dressed in pink satin clothes, they have wigs on, Mary wears make-up... Maybe someday I'll find out why is so. It looks like one from a Mexican TV serial and I highly doubt it is a 16th century copy as some sources claim.
The church has a big organ.
Behind the church on the hill, there are two more buildings, a copy of the 4th form of the Holy Sepulcher from Jerusalem, except that this chapel is slightly smaller. Next to it is the chapel of the Rosary Mother of God, in which the statue of Mary and Jesus from the burned down original church and the statue of St. Ursula and St. Joseph are.
Among them is a grave and a memorial plaque to fallen soldiers and hostages 1941-45.
Unfortunately, in the whole area of the church it doesn't say anything anywhere, so in a self-help style, look up the information online...
Anyway , maybe your miracle is waiting for you in Nova Štifta.
